The creative ideas behind Savory Comforts were built over many decades as Lisa Alter, the executive chef and founder, excited her friends and family with her home made tasty creations.
Not wanting to limit enjoyment of her creations to family and friends only, Lisa dreamed of opening a food services business. And when the timing was right, Lisa decided to launch Savory Comforts as a home based business to serve her local San Diego community. While initially focused on savory cooking services, the Covid pandemic revealed an opportunity for her to hone her baking skills. Her friends continued to suggest she offer her baked products for sale, so Lisa expanded her focus and today, Savory Comforts offers a wide range of both savory and sweet products and services.

Chef Lisa was born and raised in the greater New York area - a melting pot of cultures and cuisines. Her love for cooking began at an early age as she created traditional eastern European, American, Italian, and other international dishes side by side with her mother, grandmothers, and aunts.
While Lisa spent her working years as an executive in the high-tech industry, her passion as a foodie continued to grow and her creativity in the kitchen continued to blossom. She began creating her own delectable recipes, and when others asked her to share those recipes, she began writing them down so they could be reproduced. Lisa loved nothing more than to gather a crowd at her home for a traditional holiday meal, celebration, or informal get together and showcase her culinary creations.
Although not classically trained, Lisa wanted to perfect her cooking and baking techniques. So, as time permitted, Lisa enrolled in hands-on continuing education cooking classes at various culinary education centers, the most notable being the Culinary Institute of America, where she successfully completed their culinary boot camp, Artisan breads class and Italian Cucina classes.
Today, Lisa is retired from high-tech and is focused on her passion as a second career – as a baker, private chef, caterer, food enthusiast and educator. She loves nothing more than to create and share her own recipes, delight her clients, friends and family with her tasty creations, and teach others how to prepare the same in their own kitchen through private classes and as a Chef Instructor at Sur La Table.
